Ratnapura

Ratnapura has been recognized as the city of gems since ancient times. The fact that most of Sri Lanka’s world renowned valuable stones, such as blue sapphires and rubies, are located in the Ratnapura area is the only reason this city is known as “the city of gems.” Ratnapura is home to a number of religious, natural, and other attractions, including the mountain Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak), Pothgul Viharaya, Diva Guhava, Maha Saman Devale, Bopath Ella, Katugas Ella, Kirindi Ella, the Gem Museum, National Museum (Ehelepola Walauva), and Pompakelle Forest Park, which are all popular with both locals and visitors. Ratnapura also serves as a gateway to the world-renowned Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve, Uda Walawe National Park, and Kitulgala.
